The Peace That Surpasses

PeaceI don’t know about you, but all the political hostility, race batting, constant shootings, cops being assassinated; I have not been feeling very peaceful lately.  I’ve been struggling to feel that peace that surpasses all understanding. Below is a bit of a re-wright of a post from 2013 but felt it so applicable today with all the insanity going on in our country and world right now.

The absolute evil and vileness going on reminds me of the following scripture and makes me think we could be closer to the end times than most of us thought.

Revelation 12:12-17

12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens,
and you who dwell in them!
Woe to the earth and the sea,
for the Devil has come down to you
with great fury,
because he knows he has a short time.

13 When the dragon saw that he had been thrown to earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given two wings of a great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent’s presence to her place in the wilderness, where she was fed for a time, times, and half a time.[a] 15 From his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river flowing after the woman, to sweep her away in a torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river that the dragon had spewed from his mouth. 17 So the dragon was furious with the woman and left to wage war against the rest of her offspring[b]—those who keep God’s commands and have the testimony about Jesus.

With the persecution of Christians throughout the world and the insane embracing of Islam in this Country,  those scriptures really fit in my opinion.

I’ve been praying for peace and wisdom in all this, but it is a daily effort not to let anger get the best of me.  I think the praying I’ve been doing has led me to the phrase, “The peace of God” which led me to the following scriptures and this post. When I typed, the peace of God into Bible Gateway, the following two scriptures below popped up and got me thinking.

Colossians 3:14-16

14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Philippians 4:6-8

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Lately its been hard meditating on things that are pure, or lovely, or of good report or of virtue or things praiseworthy. Instead I’ve been consumed by all the evil and wickedness that has been going on around us.  Instead of turning it over to God and trusting him to deal with it, I pray about it and keep on thinking about it.

It reminds me of a story I heard a long time ago about four little boys sitting in the yard playing. The mother of one of the boys happened to look out the window, and to her horror, in between the four boys was a skunk. The mother instantly yells out the window, “It’s a skunk, run” Well, the boys all got up, one of them picking up the skunk, and they all ran away.  How often do we go to God in prayer just to pick up our problem, and carry it off when we’re done?  So, instead of leaving our problem at His feet like He says, we pick the skunk back up and run off wondering why life still seems to stink.

How about you? Do you bring your trials and tribulations to God in prayer only to pick them up and carry them off when you’re done?  I believe the times are evil and that evil is speeding up.  There is a lot of talk about making this Country great again.  Well, I’m all for that, but only so much can be done by a man.  This County will never be great again, unless and until we repent as a nation and beg God to come back and be our leader.  But no matter what happens, if we give our lives over, and walk with God, we can have that peace that surpasses all understanding even in the midst of a world that has gone mad.

What do you think?
