7). The 6th Commandment
8). The 7th Commandment
9). The 8th Commandment, and
10. The 9th Commandment

In the 1st four Commandments God teaches us how we are to relate to, honor, obey and respect Him. In the following six Commandments God teaches us how to relate to, honor and respect each other.

So, let’s take a look at the 9th Commandment, and consider what it says to us. It’s actually as simple and strait forward as they come, but is probably one of the most broken Commandments that God gave us. (All scriptures used are from the Holman Bible unless otherwise stated)

Exodus 20:16

16 Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.

Not giving false testimony against your neighbor is a blanket condemnation of lying in general, and boy do people lie.  People lie as casually as they hook up with strangers for one night stands.  We have become a nation of lie tellers.  Remember the joke, “How do you know when a politician is lying?  When their lips are moving”.

Everyone lies from time to time. Sometimes we are afraid to tell the truth, or maybe we don’t want to hurt someone. Maybe we panic because we realize we did something wrong and just don’t want to admit it. Those are lies and condemned by God, but if you feel remorse and wish you had not lied, God will forgive you if you ask. What I’m really focusing on here is the lie that is given without a second thought. Lies that are told for no other reason than to deceive and cheat others.

Proverbs 12:22

22 Lying lips are detestable to the Lord,
but faithful people are His delight.

Psalm 31:18

Let lying lips be quieted; they speak arrogantly against the righteous with pride and contempt.

Psalm 120:2

“Lord, deliver me from lying lips and a deceitful tongue.”

It amazes me how much work people put into scamming and cheating others.  You have Con-artists taking advantage of the elderly to steal their life savings. You have people lying on line to steal peoples identities.  You have politicians that will saying anything  in order to get elected to office.  We have a Government that lies to us daily to promote an agenda that is contrary to our Constitution.

I heard of many instances where construction contractors charge people for quality materials, but put substandard materials into their work.

Psalm 101:7

No one who acts deceitfully will live in my palace; no one who tells lies will remain in my presence.

Also, look at how many people deny Christ.  What does God inspire to be said about them?

1 John 2:22

Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah? This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son.

I found the following scripture of interest in that it says that some people are just wicked and embrace a life of lying from birth.  It’s sad, but look around, listen to most of the main stream media and see if you don’t see that.  We live in a culture  now that is publicly anti God in all the places of power and learning.  They are liars like their father the prince of liars.

Psalm 58:3

The wicked go astray from the womb; liars err from birth.

Proverbs 19:22

What is desirable in a man is his fidelity; better to be a poor man than a liar.

And look what Isaiah had to say to God’s people:

Isaiah 57:4

Who is it you are mocking? Who is it you are opening your mouth and sticking out your tongue at? Isn’t it you, you rebellious children, you race of liars,

And what did Jesus Himself have to say about liars and who they follow?

John 8:44

You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars.

We can see the following scripture come alive in our public square.

1 John 2:22

Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah? This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son.

The following scripture should make one’s skin grow cold if they live the life of lying to others.

Revelation 21:8

But the cowards, unbelievers, vile, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars—their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

If you are one of those who believes the Old Testament has no relevance for us today I feel for you, because God nor human nature changes.  So, unless you understand the history of God’s people, the good, the bad, and the ugly; you can in no way understand the things that are soon to come.

If you have never read or have not read the book of Jeremiah in a long time, I suggest you make some time to do so.  After I’m done with this series on the 10 Commandments, I’m going to start delving into what God had to say to His people through His Prophets.  He made so many wonderful promises if we’d just follow and honor Him, but there is even more curses to come on a people who refuse to obey and honor Him.

Although I know there are good people who love and honor God in our Country, we as a people have rejected Him.  God said very clearly if we, “as a people” play the harlot and refuse to honor and obey Him, He will remove the hedge and leave us to our own devise.  Those of you who love, honor, and obey God will be safe from much of the calamity to come,  but to those who don’t will have to go through the fire which will hopefully bring them to repentance.

I believe anyone who walks with God as a follower and not just a believer, has to feel a stiring in their heart.  We are currently 15 trillion dollars in debt with nothing to back it up.  We as a nation have turned our back on God. We have a government that refuses to protect our boarders and a culture that has become so politically correct that writing this blog may soon be considered hate speech.

We need to get back to the basics.  If you attend a church that preaches nothing but feel good messages or prosperity, you might want to find a smaller church were they preach from the Bible.  You might want to find a preacher that tells you what you’re doing wrong even if it’s uncomfortable.  When Jesus returns, it’s not going to be pretty for those who have spent their lives in their own pursuits, and not in the things of God.  The scriptures call us to be honest and honorable.  Where do you stand?
